A CASE HISTORY FOR PF-DIAGNOSE
PF-Diagnose is perfect for a
diverse fleet, it supports J1708 and J1939 protocols and is easy
to use. Like any diagnostic software, you need to become
familiar with the features, the easy to understand manual is not
very big and does assume a basic understanding or sensors and
electronic systems.
In a recent example, I was at
Joe Johnson Equipment yesterday, they specialize in special
purpose equipment such as Trackless, and Vactor. They had a new
Mark VI Trackless in the shop and were attempting to diagnose it
with the OEM software but were unable to connect. I suggested
they try PF-Diagnose, we connected the IC4 (They use the IC4
adapter because they have International's Master Diagnostics
software already) Selected the IC4 adapter and because the new
trackless is J1939 only we selected that from the coms menu.
Clicked on CONNECT and instantly the graph started to read, the
gauges started to read and ACTIVE CODES came up in the engine
section. I clicked on the fault codes tab and there was an
active code for Low Coolant level. Complete with the Cummins
Flash Code
This machine uses a Cummins
QSB engine and a Sauer Danfoss hydrostatic system.
Here is a photo of one
On Monday, The nearby
township had a Sterling Dump-truck broken down with a Stop
Engine light, we connected to it and got 2 codes, one active and
one inactive for Turbo Actuator out-of-adjustment and Turbo
Actuator stuck
Today we looked at a Sterling
Vactor unit with a Cat C-15, it had inactive Oil Pressure Sensor
shorted low codes, Later today We connected PF-Diagnose to a
2005 Aerial Fire Truck for the local Fire Department that was
idling rough and hunting, it would also not run up on high idle
in PTO mode. We found an Injection Control Pressure out-of-range
low code, complete with the International flash code, the engine
is a DT570E we monitored the pressure and found it to be 360-420
PSI at idle, this is too low, we also looked at the transmission
input and output speed (Allison Automatic) and noted a
fluctuation in the output speed of between .5 and 2 MPH, the
vehicle was stationary so we have a transmission speed sensor
problem that is causing the PTO mode to kick out because the
engine ECM is seeing road speed., we looked at the cruise
control switches and they were functioning perfectly.
As you can see, PF-Diagnose
is very useful, it does not have the ability to change
parameters, but does have the ability to view them in a wide
range of equipment. You can get fault codes with descriptions
that mean something. If it has a 6 or 9 Pin Deutsch data
port, you can connect to it, from Case loaders to John Deere To
Vactor.
